![]() ![]() New document work area (below), looks just like an Artboard (below that). After the introduction of the artboards, I started use photoshop to create sets of icons (one icon per artboard) and then export it as PNG with transparent background. But as a 25-year Apple support tech, it seems these things could be made to work more intuitively. Many basic things like this will undoubtedly become automatic if I continue to work with your apps. I spent quite a while trying to figure out how to select the default work area, when I finally figured out it is not an artboard. Speaking of Artboards, it was very confusing to figure out the work area that shows in a new document is NOT an artboard (see attached). I did eventually figure out how to at least change the color of an Artboard, so I could see the white image I was working on. Step 1: Go to the overhead menu and select View > Show Transparency Grid ( Shift + Command + D ). You can turn on the transparency grid view to see it. ![]() If it's in Preferences, it's not obvious where. Actually, the white background you see when you create a document is transparent. I STILL haven't figured out where the command is for that. I guess there may be a reason you do it this way, but it was frustrating.Ģ) Granted, I'm a beginning with Designer, but.I was trying to figure out how to make the background into a checkerboard (which is convenient when working with transparent images). As I recall, the way to achieve this was much more obvious in Photoshop. When working in Adobe Illustrator, you may notice that your artboard appears to have a white background. Someone quickly explained I had to first Rasterize the image before I could save it as a transparent gif. I couldn't find an answer by googling or youtubing and had to resort to asking in this forum. Answer (1 of 3): So, if you open any PDF in Photoshop then it will open as a raster graphic, so what you can do it while opening the PDF select background as transparent. This can be any image with a background you want to remove. ![]() As Firebird Graphics mentions above, if you want to maintain transparency when you export, you need to export in a format that supports transparency. The canvas always appears white when you're working, but if there's no object, it is transparent. I recently bought your 3 main apps for my Mac (to replace Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign). The background is always transparent unless you add an object that covers the background. ![]()
